Toastmasters International (TI) is a US-headquartered nonprofit education organization that operates clubs worldwide for the purpose of promoting communication, public speaking, and leadership.  

It grew out of a single club founded by Ralph C. Smedley on October 22, 1924, at the YMCA in Santa Ana, California, United States.  it originated as a set of class with the aim of improving the communication skills of the young men under his charge.  Toastmasters International was incorporate under California law in December 19, 1932.

The first international chapter was established in Vancouver, Canada, in 1932.  Then, the organization began admitting women in 1973.

Throughout its history, Toastmasters has served over 4 million people, and today the organization serves over 364,000 members in 145 countries, through its 16,200 member clubs.  Toastmasters membership increased rapidly around the  turn of the century, nearing 16,000 clubs worldwide by 2016.

Toastmasters International Speech Contest Rulebook: Speech Contest Rulebook 2022-2023

Speech contests are an important part of  the Toastmasters education program.  They provide an opportunity for Toastmasters to gain speaking experience, as well as an opportunity for other Toastmasters to learn by observing proficient speakers.


Toastmasters International Youth Leadership Program: Youth Leadership Program

The Youth Leadership Program is a workshop consisting of 8 one- to two-hour sessions that enable those under the age of 18 to develop their communication and leadership skills through practical experience. The program is presented during or after school, or on weekends.  In the workshop, young people will learn how to:

    • Evaluate their own speaking ability
    • Prepare and deliver speeches
    • Give impromptu talks
    • Control their voice, vocabulary, and gestures
    • Give constructive feedback and more
